Villa Zorayda Museum

Villa Zorayda Museum

Built in 1883, the Villa Zorayda is a beautiful architectural gem in Saint Augustine, Florida. Inspired by the 12th-century Moorish Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain, the museum features ornate decor and colorful details. This building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a must-visit for any architecture and history buff.

The museum was built by Franklin Smith and was used as his residence for 20 years. Prior to being open to the public as a museum in 1933, the building had several transformations. Called the Zorayda Club, the building was the site of a prominent restaurant and dance club as well as a casino and speakeasy for awhile.

The storied past of this structure is just part of its appeal. You'll find a diverse collection of antiques, paintings, 17th-century furniture, oriental rugs, fine art, and more. One of the most iconic artifacts here is a 2,400-year-old Egyptian Rug named the "Sacred Cat Rug," which was made from the hairs of cats that roamed the Nile River.

For a unique experience at the museum, attend the annual candlelight tours of the Villa Zorayda.
